A bor készítés hagyománya évszázadok óta
The tradition of winemaking for centuries
We have a wide selection of top-rated wines, thus we are present on the domestic and foreign markets by offering more than 10 different types of bottled wine, in addition to the red wines distinguishing the Szekszárd wine region. Our vinery mainly focuses on fresh, fruity wines, but we also offer stronger and heavier types.
1974 was the year in which we planted our first major vineyard in Kisbödő. This was the first large-scale plantation in the history of our winery. Since in those days there was a bigger demand for white grapes, we started off with the plantation of Tramini, Müller-Thurgau and Welschriesling. According to the regulations of those times, one family could only farm on 800 squares.
As soon as regualtions changed, and the 800 squares were allowed to be farmed by person and not by families, we purchased new vineyards, and started the plantation of red grapes. In the beginning we processed the grapes in our family cellar, but we were in the need of more space, therefore we built a new cellar. Thanks to the quality of our grapes and wines, the investment payed off in no more than 3 years.
Thanks to the compensation we received after the regime change the area of our vineyards grew to 10 ha. We got our oringal land back in Kerékhegy and Bodzás, in addition to those we purchased new ones in Hidaspetre, Leányvár and Tolna. The investment proved us right once again and we successfully sold the harvest. The gains were devoted to new developments.
We finished boulding our plant at the end of street Damjanich. This particular investment was necessary because the market went through a significant change, that resulted growing needs for bottled wines.
We were attentive of the market’s needs, and we found it necessary to make further developments on the plant. We doubled the storage capacity and we also managed to modernize our technique.
In the year 2000 a cellar more than 250 years of age came into our own, and we immediately started the renovations – of course, with respect of the old times. Today our visitors have the chance to step into a truly magnificent and compelling cellar. In the Wine House we usually arrange wine exhibitions and events. Our wine shop is also located here, where one can find our entire collection of products.
Our 2006 Merops Cuvée received the gold medal in an international wine competition in Bordeaux. The site of the plant has once again became to small with the new bottler and the growing need of our wines on the market.
The biggest area with Kadarka grapes is ours with no less than 12 ha. Kadarka became our labour of love, we even started planting clones of it. Thanks to our good relationship with the Research Centre of Pécs, we developed our own two Kadarka clones: Mészi and Virághegyi.
The propagation and the development of these clones are very important purposes of our winery. The registration of Mészi Kadarka as a breed was initated in 2003 and finished in 2012.
2012 was also the year in which the Hungarian Wine Academy, The Hungarian Wine and Grape Producers, and the National Council of Mountain Villages elected us as Winery of the Year.
In the fall of 2014 we opened our hotel and restaurant in the neighbourhood of the Wine House, located in the centre of Szekszárd. We welcome our guests with four star quality, special interiors, prepared staff and personalized service. In the hotel you can find 22 rooms, a wellness area and and event room available for 150 people.
The exclusively furnished a’la carte restaurant and the lovely inner terrace can be an excellent location for gatherings of friends and family, romantic dinners or business meals. Here you can also taste all of our wines, above all that the constantly updated menu is a great opportunity to try local flavors and special meals.
In the Challenge International Du Vin 2016 wine competition our winery received two gold and one silver medals. In this annual event numerous famous wineries compete with one another since 1976.
After being nominated in 2015, Pál Mészáros ended up in the final 5 of the competition. Following the decision of the Hungarian Wine Academy, in 2016 the title of the Wine Producer of the Year went to Pál Mészáros. In this very same year we received the award of Hungary’s Most Beautiful Estate, turning 2016 into a very fruitful year for our winery.
I heard this old wisdom from my grandfather, "My son, grapes produce the farm, but the farm does not produce the grapes." I have had a special attraction to grapes ever since.
